The German Cancer Society , the German Cancer Aid Foundation and the DKFZ organized the event as the first joint measure of the “National Decade Against Cancer ”.

The cancer research congress was opened by Anja Karliczek , the Federal Minister for Education and Research. Among other things, she referred to the goal of the National Decade Against Cancer : that researchers, doctors, patients and all other partners should join forces "to better understand cancer, to prevent cancer, to cure cancer". Theresia Bauer , Minister of Science of the State of Baden-Württemberg , warned in her greetings against "full-bodied announcements" regarding the fight against cancer. In doing so, she criticized a statement by the Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn , who said a few days earlier that “cancer can be defeated in 10 to 20 years”.

Michael Baumann, CEO and Scientific Director of the DKFZ, warned of a considerable increase in cancer incidence in Germany and spoke of a " tsunami " with currently 500,000 new cases per year in the Federal Republic .

Technical lectures were given by Florian Greten , Uwe Haberkorn , Peter Lichter , Uğur Şahin , Rita Schmutzler and Lars Zender , among others .

The goal

The organizers believe that the large number of specialist participants at the first such cancer research congress is an occasion to plan such a scientific conference with international participation every two years. This could contribute to increased cancer research "in order to further improve the care of people with cancer and to find more effective cancer prevention options for the entire population," said Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven at the conference. Cancer research is the most important tool to advance cancer medicine. The promotion of cancer research has therefore been a core concern of the German Cancer Aid Foundation in the fight against this widespread disease for many years .
