Rita Schmutzler (* 1958 ) is the director of the Center for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer at the University Clinic in Cologne and coordinator of the German Consortium for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer . Schmutzler is a gynecologist and specializes in the care of people with a family history of gynecological tumor diseases such as breast , ovarian and uterine cancer .

Life

From 1979 to 1984, Schmutzler completed her studies in human medicine at the University of Bonn. There she received her doctorate in 1984. In the following year 1985 and 1988 she successfully completed the American medical exams FMGEMS and FLEX. From 1986 to 1992, Schmutzler completed further training in gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Bonn, where from 1994 she also took over the development and management of the Center for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer at the Women's Clinic. She has been a university professor since 2003 and director of the Center for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer at the University Clinic in Cologne since 2012.

In 1984, Schmutzler started her scientific career as an assistant at the Institute for Biochemistry at the University of Bonn. The following year 1985 she received a DAAD scholarship in the field of gynecological endocrinology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, USA. From 1989 to 1990 she received a DFG scholarship on the subject of gene variants of the estrogen receptor in breast cancer at Mount Medical School, New York, USA.

From 1994 to 1997 a DFG postdoctoral fellowship followed with a postdoctoral qualification in the field of gynecology and obstetrics as well as on the subject of molecular genetic alterations in sporadic breast cancer in 1997. In 2003, Schmutzler became the endowed professor of the German Cancer Aid for molecular gynecological oncology at the University of Cologne's women's clinic appointed. Since 2005 she has been coordinating the 18 centers for familial breast and ovarian cancer in Germany. Since 1994, Schmutzler has made a name for herself as the head of several third-party funded projects for the identification and diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic significance of breast cancer-associated risk genes through the German Cancer Aid Foundation, the German Research Foundation and the BMBF .

Research priorities

Schmutzler's research focuses on gynecological oncology , especially molecular genetics of breast and ovarian cancer , hereditary gynecological tumor diseases and cancer prevention . The aim of her research is to break down the genetic causes of the predisposition and to offer affected women preventive measures in order to either prevent the disease from breaking out or to recognize the disease early enough to be curable.
