Peter Lichter (born October 16, 1957 in Mannheim ) is a German biologist and university professor .

Career and areas of work

Lichter studied biology at Heidelberg University from 1977 to 1983 . He wrote his dissertation Structure and Expression of Genomic Information for the Heavy Chain of a Human Myosin , on which he received his doctorate in 1986 , at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg . Afterwards, Lichter was employed as a post-doctoral student at the School of Medicine in Yale (USA) for four years . In 1990 he went back to Heidelberg to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), where he became head of the project group “Organization of Complex Genomes”. In 1992 he was at the DKFZ department managers and 1995 he was at the University of Heidelberg habilitation . He received the Venia legendi for Molecular Human Genetics . In 2000, Lichter became a full professor at Heidelberg University .

Lichter's fields of work include the pathomechanisms of tumor development, tumor markers , the molecular characterization of tumor cells and their genome organization and gene functions. He works on in situ hybridization methods for gene localization, on high-resolution mapping of chromosomal aberrations and on gene mapping. His specialty is leukemia , especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia , in which, among other things, he mapped genetic changes. Lichter made significant contributions to the first representations of individual human chromosomes in metaphase spreading and in the cell nuclei. To do this, he used chromosome-specific probes for fluorescence in situ hybridization .
