With the help of his first programming knowledge and the information from the police radio he succeeded, according to Dorsey, in “filling the virtual card with life” on the computer. He created open source programs that are used today by some taxi companies in the USA for their operational organization .

After graduating from high school, Dorsey first studied at the Missouri University of Science and Technology , a part of the University of Missouri at Rolla that is primarily geared towards engineering courses . Soon after, he moved to New York University in Manhattan . He moved to Oakland in 1999 as a programmer and went on to program guidance systems for taxis, couriers and ambulances.

Before starting his entrepreneurial career, Dorsey initially took various other paths. In 2000, Dorsey aspired to become a botanical draftsman, then trained as a masseur for a year and later took up a degree in fashion design. He did not complete his studies.

He worked as a mannequin.

Instead, Dorsey and his team had to go into business for themselves and look for donors who, of course, expected a corporate structure. As of 2006, Dorsey was CEO of Twitter. In 2008 he resigned from the post and was replaced by co-founder Williams, Dorsey in return took his less time-consuming job of chairman of the board .

In May 2009 Dorsey presented the Square mobile payment service to the public.

Since 2011, Dorsey has been a member of the top management level of Twitter again as Chairman of the Board of Directors and divides his working hours between the two companies. He sees no problem in the fact that Twitter is financed, but still does not generate any profit. Dorsey sees the company still in the establishment and development phase and focuses on expanding the company network. Dorsey has been CEO of Twitter again since October 6, 2015, after serving as interim CEO since July 1, 2015 .
