The World Water Forum has been a forum of the World Water Council that has been taking place regularly since 1997 , which deals with raising awareness of water supply problems and promoting water management on a political and social level.

history

The World Water Forum, which has taken place every three years since 1997 , was initiated by the World Water Council , a think tank founded in 1996, under its President Mahmoud Abu Zeid , the Egyptian Minister for Water Resources and Irrigation . The World Water Council consists of 300 representatives from business, ministries, science, international financial institutions, the UN and local governments. The founders include the board members of international companies such as the multinational Suez . The World Water Forum is not an official intergovernmental body.

Events

A large event takes place every three years.

1st forum in Marrakech 1997

The first World Water Forum took place in Marrakech in 1997 .

2nd Forum in The Hague 2000

In March 2000, 5,700 participants gathered in The Hague for the second World Water Forum. In the final declaration, access to water is declared as a fundamental need . Thus, according to critics, access to water is no longer a human right, but a commodity.

3rd Forum in Kyoto 2003

From March 16 to 23, 2003, the third World Water Forum took place near Lake Biwa and the Yodogawa catchment area ( Kyōto , Shiga and Osaka prefectures ). In the year of fresh water , several thousand participants discussed the future of the water supply for the world's population. Due to the dominant events of the Third Gulf War , this event received little media attention .

4th Forum in Mexico City 2006

In 2006 the fourth World Water Forum IV Foro Mundial del Agua took place in Mexico City from March 16-22 . With over 19,800 participants, it was a great challenge for Mexico. Its final document does not contain a call for a human right to drinking water . Another important topic that the 4th World Water Forum provided a platform was the topic of privatization .

5th Forum in Istanbul 2009

In 2009 the fifth World Water Forum took place in Istanbul from March 16-22. Topics were, for example, a better drinking water supply. The human right to water , which some states had requested, was not accepted.

6th Forum in Marseille 2012

The theme of this sixth edition, which took place from March 12th to 17th, 2012, was Time for solutions ("Time for Solutions"). There were 35,000 visitors from 145 countries around the world, 15 of whom were heads of state. The World Water Council pursued three strategies: ensuring the wellbeing of all, contributing to economic development and preserving the blue planet.

7th forum in Daegu and Gyeongju 2015

The seventh World Water Forum took place in Daegu and Gyeongju , South Korea, from April 7th to 17th, 2015. The theme of the forum was Water for our future . There were 40,000 participants from 168 countries, including 9 heads of state and 100 national government delegations.

8th Forum in Brasília 2018

The 8th forum is scheduled to take place in Brasília , Brazil, in 2018 .
