development

The chairman of the NAL, Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, was removed from his seat in Parliament by the Supreme Court shortly after the elections on August 29, 1969, on the basis of a conviction of serious financial crimes. Without leadership, the NAL joined forces with three smaller parties, chaired by Joe Appiah, to form the Justice Party in October 1970.

The NAL took part in the elections to the National Assembly ( National Assembley ) on August 29, 1969 during the period of military rule of the National Liberation Council in the transition phase to democracy and won 29 of the 140 seats, or about 30.4 percent of the vote. The NAL (after renaming the JP) was the main opposition party during the reign of Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia . The NAL or the JP was banned and dissolved with the general party ban after the second military coup in Ghana on January 13, 1972 by Ignatius Kutu Acheampong .
