National Defense Authorization Act
The National Defense Authorization Act ( NDAA ; German approval law for national defense ) is a US federal law that determines the budget of the US Department of Defense (DoD). With this standard, the budget resolution takes on the character of a law every year and is the prerequisite for the budget of the US armed forces . While the first laws were very brief - the law passed in June 1961 "To authorize appropriations for aircraft, missiles, and naval vessels for the Armed Forces, and for other purposes." Was not even a full page long and the law of November 1979 only barely 18 pages long - the laws finally became more and more extensive and other content was also packed into them: For example, the National Defense Authorization Act 2012 expanded the powers of the military to detain American citizens and foreigners on suspicion for an unlimited period under military law, If necessary, both criminal and civil law may be overridden at the same time. And the more than 1100 pages long NDAA law for the fiscal year 2020 contains e.g. E.g. in section 7503 the sanctions against the laying of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline .
The Kyl-Bingaman Amendment was enacted in 1997 under the NDAA.
