National Intelligence Agency (United States)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is an organization under the US intelligence service CIA and has existed since 1947. With the Intelligence Reorganization Act (German: Law for the restructuring of the secret services ), a comprehensive law which, among other things, tried to clear up and redistribute ambiguities about jurisdiction and responsibility between the secret services of the USA, the NIA lost much of its autonomy in 1992 in favor of the CIA. Before that, the NIA worked independently and was more closely related to the National Security Agency (NSA).

The National Intelligence Agency employs both civilians and members of the US armed forces . The NIA also awards military-style awards for service within the agency, with the highest National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal being named.
