National Patriotic Front of Liberia

The National Patriotic Front of Liberia (abbreviation NPFL , English National Patriotic Front of Liberia ) is a rebel group that took part in the Liberian Civil War .

Led by Charles Taylor , a former government official, the NPFL criticized the frequent cases of corruption and fought as a liberation organization against the regime of Samuel Doe under the National Democratic Party of Liberia from December 24, 1989. Most of the NPFL fighters came from the Liberian Gio and Mano peoples in the north, who were oppressed during the Doe regime. The NPFL received aid from Libya , the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso .

The NPFL is charged with a number of serious human rights violations , including massacres, torture and kidnappings.

In 1997, the organization was renamed a legal political party, the National Patriotic Party .
