The National Patriotic Party (abbreviation NPP , German National Patriotic Party ) is a political party in Liberia .
It was founded in 1997 by the members of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia after the end of the first Liberian civil war .
The party objected to the 1997 general election, with NPFL leader Charles Taylor serving as the party's presidential candidate. Taylor won the presidential election with 75% of the vote. The party won 49 of the 64 seats in the House of Representatives and 21 of the 26 in the Senate . Due to national and international pressure as a result of the Second Liberian Civil War, Taylor resigned as president in August 2003. In October of the same year, Taylor's successor, Moses Blah , and the members of the legislature resigned and transferred power to the National Transitional Government of Liberia.
The party later challenged the 2005 election. The party's presidential candidate was Roland Massaquoi , who received 4.1% of the vote in the vote. The NPP won four seats in the House of Representatives and another four in the Senate.
