Hieronymus Schaffhirt (* 1530 in Dresden , Electorate of Saxony ; † December 20, 1578 ibid) was a German papermaker and city judge in Dresden.

Live and act

Hieronymus Schaffhirt was a trained paper maker. He took over the paper mill in Dresden from his father. This was in front of the Wilsdruffer Tor on Weißeritzmühlgraben in the then suburb of Poppitz . Today the Papiermühlengasse still reminds of their existence. The paper mill in Dresden existed until 1914. The Schaffhirt papermaking family, well-known in Saxony and the surrounding area, ran paper mills in more than 20 locations from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

Hieronymus Schaffhirt married Margarethe Beringer in 1553, the daughter of a council member. Schaffhirt himself was a council member and judge of the city of Dresden from 1572 to 1577.

On April 25, 1559, Schaffhirt acquired the right to build the paper mill in Dittersbach from the electoral chancellor Hieronymus Kiesewetter (1512–1586) . Paper was produced at the site until 1959, then agricultural machinery until 1989.

On October 27, 1576, the then Mr. von Lohmen and Elector August's Chamber Secretary, Johann (Hans) Jenitz , sold the newly built paper mill at Wesenitzbach in Lohmen to Hieronymus Schaffhirt. This paper mill was converted into a grinding mill, the so-called front mill, before 1619.

In 1577 Hieronymus Schaffhirt complained to the Elector that Georg Schwarz, a member of the Dresden council, had built a paper mill under Königstein and was running a paper scale in his garden house in the Dresden suburb. Thereupon, on June 4, 1578, Elector August granted the Dresden paper mill the privilege to the effect that no one else had the right to build another paper mill within four miles or to buy any rags .

Hieronymus Schaffhirt also owned the Haselberg Hammergut in Hartmannsbach . This was sold to Barthel Jentzsch after his death. When the estate was divided on June 2, 1582, it was mentioned, among other things, that the bookbinder Samuel Selfisch from Wittenberg owed him 100 guilders.

Hieronymus Schaffhirt died on December 20, 1578. On this day, Elector August's writing calendar read: "Is Hironimus shepherd Pappirmacher, at 9 o'clock in the evening in God blissfully asleep (in Dresden)". He was buried next to his father under the Schwibbogen number 24 on the south wall of the Old Frauenkirche in Dresden in the churchyard . A relief made of paper dough was attached here as a memorial stone. This is currently in the Dresden City Museum . It depicts the crucifixion scene of Jesus Christ . The production from paper dough is very unusual. The unknown artist used similar elements as Lucas Cranach the Elder in his woodcut Crucifixion of Christ (1509), for example the seated Mary Magdalene.

family

Hieronymus Schaffhirt was the son of the papermaker Michael Schaffhirt. With his wife Margarethe Beringer (* around 1522, † around 1614; dies at the age of 92) he had 7 children (Hieronymus, Stephan, Margarethe, Anna, Magdalena, Concordia and Michael). The son Michael Schaffhirt (1564–1632), also a council member in Dresden, supervised the expansion of the Dresden Annenkirche in 1619 . The sons Hieronymus and Stephan were enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on November 3, 1572 . Hieronymus (II) continued to run the Lohmen paper mill until his death on April 29, 1595. The daughter Anna (* around 1557 in Dresden; † 1618) married Jonas Möstel (1540–1607) in Dresden in 1578 , court clerk, town clerk and later mayor of Dresden and uncle of mayor Theodor Möstel . Daughter Margarethe married the papermaker Friedrich Frey in 1574, who already took over the paper mill “Na Kameni” in Prague's old town in 1562 from his father and from 1578–1607 ran the Dittersbach paper mill after the death of his father-in-law.
