The mayor's chain of office

The list of Lord Mayors of Dresden shows the holders of the office of Mayor of Dresden since 1292, whose name used to be only mayor.

The first verifiable name of a Dresden mayor is Hermanus von Blankenwalde from 1292. The mayor was newly appointed every year by the city council. In the Middle Ages, this consisted of 19 people, including 11 councilors and 7 aldermen. Most of these came from a small circle of distinguished families and usually elected a person who had previously belonged to the council. Until 1517 the election took place before Christmas. The term of office began on January 6 of the following year. Duke Georg set the election date for Easter in 1518 and the term of office began at Walpurgis . From 1599 the council election took place after the Easter days. From 1399 on it was also customary to obtain confirmation of the newly elected council from the sovereign. This procedure was only abandoned in 1831.

According to the council order of 1470, there was always one ruling and two dormant councilors from this time. The same rhythm also applied to the three elected mayors. So they always changed in the order of ruling - associate - resting mayors. In 1517 the old council regulations were replaced by a new council constitution, which remained in effect until 1832 with a few changes. The council consisted from then on of 21 persons elected for life, who took turns in the government. The ruling (seated) council, which was appointed for one year, consisted of 12 councilors, two of whom and the mayor moved into the following year. Only in the case of serious violations, impoverishment or moving away from Dresden, the council membership ended, otherwise only with death. By 1832 at least 125 mayors were known by name.

Since Dresden passed the 100,000 mark in 1853, there has been the title of Lord Mayor .
