Herbert Georg Gute (born August 30, 1905 in Dresden ; † November 18, 1975 ibid) was a German politician and Lord Mayor of Dresden from 1958 to 1961.

Life

Herbert Gute was born as the son of an accountant in the Saxon capital. He attended the Epiphany School and trained as a carpenter. He studied at the State Academy for Applied Arts from 1924. In 1928 he joined the KPD. He was active in the agitprop group Rote Rakete and was deputy head of the Marxist Workers' School (MASCH) and one of the organizers of the Asso in Dresden.

After the seizure of power in 1933, he built an underground quarter for the KPD . He was caught doing it and arrested. During the time of National Socialism , he was held in various prisons in Dresden, Waldheim and Zeithain and was interned in Buchenwald concentration camp towards the end of the Second World War .

After the war, he built the KPD agitation department in 1945. He became ministerial director in the German administration for public education and there head for public education, art and literature. In 1951 he received the title of professor at the pedagogical faculty at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Together with Martin Hänisch , he created the design for the GDR's national coat of arms.

The Central Committee of the SED finally appointed him Lord Mayor of Dresden in 1958 . In office he had to struggle with various problems, including the lack of productivity in Dresden's economy and the lack of housing. With his self-criticism ( we were not in constant contact with the masses ) he made many enemies in his own party . When he fell ill in 1960, the Central Committee pushed for his dismissal. On June 14, 1961, he was removed from office as mayor. As head of the DEFA studio for animated films, he worked for another year until he ended his political career. After retiring, he wrote books and articles for magazines.

In 1958 and 1970 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1965 he received the Order of Labor Banner .

Herbert Gute died in Dresden in November 1975. His burial took place in the honor grove of the municipal heather cemetery .
