Thomas the old town clerk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas the old town clerk ( Thomas Statschriber ) was a Dresden civil servant, councilor and mayor living in the 15th century .

Life

Nothing is known about his origins and training, as Thomas is only mentioned in the documents with his first name and his job title. From 1396 to 1412 he was Petir Berner's successor, the second city clerk of Dresden known by name. In this function he was responsible for keeping the council files and drawing up certificates and other documents. The oldest surviving Dresden city book from 1404, in which important events and contracts were recorded in writing, also comes from Thomas's tenure as city clerk.

In 1413 Thomas gave up his office and switched to the council, where he was appointed mayor for the first time in the same year. In the following period he appears regularly as a member of the council and in 1425 held the office of lord of the lords. This was responsible for collecting the inheritance and capital interest due to the city and other taxes. He was also responsible for the administration of the town's grain stores and the supervision of the armor chamber , in which the weapons and armaments of deceased citizens were kept. In 1429 Thomas was again mayor. The last mention of a member of the council comes from 1432.
