Hans von Carlowitz (Mayor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans von Carlowitz (also: Karlewitz, Karlewicz ; * 15th century ; † 1493 ) was a Dresden garment tailor and mayor .

Life

Carlowitz comes from the Saxon noble family von Carlowitz (first mentioned in 1311). Nothing is known about its further origin.

He was first mentioned in a document on June 3, 1448, when he was enfeoffed with Friedrich and Caspar von Carlowitz with the 1st Vorwerk of the small troops manor . This was previously owned by Friedrich II, Elector of Saxony . Already on July 22nd, 1452 the Vorwerk passed to Jost and Heinze von Karras .

Carlowitz had at least three siblings: Wilhelm von Carlowitz auf Kreischa , Katharina von Grünberg and Ursula Kundige and was married to a Margareta. In addition, Carlowitz is named on January 27, 1491 as the guardian of a Katherina, daughter of the late Hans Spengler.

In his job as a dressmaker, Carlowitz seems to have achieved some prosperity. For example, some loans to his fellow citizens are noted in the Dresden city register. In addition, in 1488 he was named the third richest citizen of Dresden with a fortune of 1,800 guilders. Investments in smelters, mills and mines on the Geisingberg are also likely to have contributed to this. Carlowitz lived in the Große Judengasse (today Schössergasse ), directly south of the Dresden Residenzschloss .

On February 28, 1493, von Carlowitz was named as mayor in the Dresden city book . On December 3, 1493, the sale of his house for 212 Rhenish guilders by his widow is documented.

Political activity

From 1476 Carlowitz sat on the city council. On November 13, 1491, Duke Georg the Bearded gave him additional responsibility for monitoring income and expenses for the reconstruction of the Kreuzkirche , which was destroyed in the town fire .

In 1493 Carlowitz took over the administration as mayor. He died in the exercise of this office that same year.
