Symon Werchaw (also Simon Werchau, Wercho, Werche ) lived in the 15th century and was a Dresden councilor and mayor of Altendresden (1460) and Dresden (from 1488).

Life

Little is known about Werchaw's life. His family probably came from the village of Werchow near Calau ( Niederlausitz ) . At first he lived in Altendresden on the right Elbe , which at that time was still an independent city. In 1459 he was city judge there and in 1460 took over the office of mayor. Until 1464 he was a member of the Altendresdner council, but then moved to Dresden on the other side of the Elbe. In 1465 he received the citizenship of Dresden .

In 1475 Symon Werchaw is mentioned for the first time as a member of the Dresden Council and held the office of lord of the lords. He was responsible for the collection and administration of the inheritance and capital interest to be paid to the city . In 1478 he also took over the management of the pan office and was thus responsible for allocating the brewing pans to citizens who were entitled to brew and collecting the associated fees ( pan interest ). From 1481 Werchaw is listed as a chamberlain in the council files. In addition, he appears several times as a notifying councilor in various legal transactions in the city register.

In 1488 Werchaw was elected mayor and took over this office every three years until 1500. In 1494 he was also head of the Frauenkirche . With a fortune of 500 guilders , he was one of the richest citizens of Dresden in 1488 and owned a house on Grosse Webergasse near the Altmarkt .
