Karl Julius Eduard Schering (born June 1, 1854 in Scharnebeck , † April 21, 1925 in Darmstadt ) was a German university professor of physics .

Life

Schering was the son of the forester Ernst Christian August Schering (1795-1871) and his wife Emilie from Lüneburg . He was the younger brother of Ernst Christian Julius Schering . He attended the Johanneum grammar school in Lüneburg and studied physics and mathematics in Göttingen from 1874 . In 1878 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil in Göttingen. He then worked as an assistant at the Physics Institute in Göttingen. In 1879 he completed his habilitation and was appointed private lecturer.

In 1883 Schering became associate professor of mathematics at the University of Strasbourg . Five years later he became a full professor of physics and head of the physical cabinet at the Technical University of Darmstadt . The Physics Institute in Darmstadt was founded in 1869 and suffered from cramped conditions for decades. As early as 1889, Schering obtained assurance that the institute would be rebuilt.

Schering was the dean of the mathematics and science school from 1893 to 1895 and had a decisive influence on the new construction of the physics building on Hochschulstrasse, which the company moved into in autumn 1894. In 1895/96 he was dean of the general department, from 1904 to 1907 dean of the chemistry department and from 1908 to 1911 dean of the electrical engineering department.

He held the office of rector of the TH Darmstadt from 1900 to 1902.

In 1886 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Together with Robert Haußner , he edited the writings of his brother Ernst Christian Julius Schering, who had died in 1897, in two volumes in 1902 and 1909.

At the end of the summer semester of 1922, Karl Schering retired.

From 1884 Schering was married to Friedrike Rudolphine Lucy (1860-1907). The daughter Mathilde emerged from this marriage in 1887. In his second marriage he was in a relationship with Ilse Anna Helma Moritz from 1913.

Karl Schering's estate has been in the Goettingen State and University Library since 1995.
