Christoph Kentman (also Kemper, Kendtmann, Christoff Polirer ; † 1570 in Dresden ) was a Dresden councilor and mayor who lived in the 16th century .

Life

Origin and family

Christoph Kentman came from a long-established Dresden bourgeois family. A Heinrich Kentman was resident in Dresden as early as the 15th century. Professionally, he worked as a gemstone cutter , which is why the family is occasionally referred to as a polisher . Heinrich Kentman died in 1504. His son Christoph Kentman (the elder; * 1492) joined the Dresden council in 1528 and was councilor there until his death on June 25, 1552. As a trained furrier , he settled back in Dresden after his years of wandering and lived here in a house on Elbgasse (today Schloßstraße ). His son Johannes Kentmann (1518–1574) became known as a physician and naturalist.

Act as councilor and mayor

His second son, Christoph, was a long-time councilor and between 1555 and 1569 the hospital manager of the Bartholomäus Hospital . In 1556 he was elected the ruling mayor for the first time and held this office every three years until 1565. In 1566, Elector August refused to confirm Kentman in his post because of his old age. Formally, however, Christoph Kentman remained a councilor until his death in 1570.
