Hermanus of Blankenwalde

Document dated October 1, 1292 with the first mention of a Dresden mayor

Hermanus von Blankenwalde (also: Hermann, Hermann von Blankenwalde ) was a Dresden councilor and mayor .

Life

Little is known about Hermann's life. In a document from Margrave Friedrich dated October 1, 1292, he is named as the brother of the margrave notary and was the first verifiable mayor (magister civium) of Dresden. This family relationship suggests that the Margrave of Saxony at least influenced the occupation of the mayor's office.

In the following years Hermanus is no longer mentioned and only reappeared as councilor in the documents in 1308. In 1311 he is named as the bridge master of the stone Elbe bridge in Dresden . An identity of these two people is presumed (among others by Otto Richter ), but cannot be clearly proven.
