Siegmund Otto (* before 1594 in Ranis ; † August 15, 1641 ) was a Dresden councilor and mayor .

Life

Otto came from the small town of Ranis in Thuringia and studied law. As Studiosus juris he became a citizen of Dresden in 1594. From 1602 he was a member of the Dresden Council until his death. In 1619 he took over the office of the governing mayor for the first time and exercised this according to the council regulations every three years until his death.

In addition to his council work, Siegmund Otto worked in the cloth trade. At his request, Elector Johann Georg II issued an order on January 26, 1614, which granted Otto, together with other merchants, the right of first refusal for all canvases processed in the Office of Hohnstein . In return, an annual rent had to be paid to the electoral rent chamber . With this order, the middlemen (factors) were obliged to sell all canvas only to Otto's company and to forego the more lucrative trade with foreign buyers in the future. However, the regulation did not bring the desired success, so that Otto renounced his privilege a little later.

In addition to his city apartment in Dresden, Otto owned a piece of land in the Lößnitz. Haus Albertsberg was later built on this area in what is now the Radebeul district of Oberlößnitz .
