Andrei Vizanti (* 4. May 1844 in Iasi , † in the 20th century) was a Romanian politician , linguist , Rumänist and Hispanist.

life and work

Vizanti studied in Iași and went to Bucharest in 1864 with his teacher Vasile Alexandrescu Urechia (whose favorite student he was) . From 1866 he studied on a scholarship (following in the footsteps of his teacher, who was married to a Spaniard) at the University of Madrid . In 1868 he finished his studies and taught from 1869 for thirty years at the University of Iași Romanian language, literature and history (also as dean). He became an MP (1878), Senator (1885) and Vice President of the Senate (1890). He was often represented at his chair (by Dimitrie Petrino 1876 to 1878, Alexandru Lambrior , Aron Densușianu and Alexandru Philippide ).

In his capacity as chairman of the theater association, he apparently did not act correctly, because he was forced to give up his chair in 1898. He escaped the charge of wasting public money in 1899 by fleeing to the United States and has been missing ever since.

Vizanti was a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy (1882-1903).
