Alexandru Philippide

Alexandru Philippide (* 1. May 1859 in Bârlad ; † 12. August 1933 in Iasi ) was a Romanian linguist and Rumänist .

life and work

Alexandru Philippide (not to be confused with his son of the same name, the poet Alexandru [A.] Philippide [1900–1979]) studied at the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași , and from 1888 to 1890 with Hermann Suchier at the University of Halle . From 1884 he was a high school teacher in Iași, from 1893 professor of Romance philology (from 1913 to 1918 also dean). In 1927 he founded the Institute for Romance Philology there, which now bears his name. Among his students were Ovid Densusianu , Iorgu Iordan and Gheorghe Ivănescu (1912–1987).

Philippide had been a full member of the Romanian Academy since 1900 .
