Hermann Suchier
Hermann Suchier (born December 11, 1848 in Carlshafen , Electorate of Hesse ; † July 3, 1914 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Romanist.
Life
Suchier came from a Huguenot family . His father was the businessman and member of the state parliament of Hesse, Henry Suchier. He began to study Romance studies , German studies and comparative linguistics at the Philipps University in Marburg . On July 27, 1867, he was reciprocated in the Corps Teutonia Marburg . As an inactive , he moved to the University of Leipzig . In 1870/71 he took part in the Franco-German War . In 1871 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. Two years later he completed his habilitation in Marburg through Ulrich von dem Türlin . In 1874 he received an associate's post in Marburg . The University of Zurich appointed him as associate professor in 1874. The following year he was appointed to the chair of the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster . In 1876 he moved to the Friedrichs University in Halle , where he stayed for 37 years. He significantly expanded the subject of Romance studies and was rector of the university in 1901/02 . In his inaugural address, he dealt with Molière's struggles for the right to perform Tartuffe . He mainly devoted himself to the edition of Old French and Old Provencal texts and wrote an Old French grammar (1893). He founded the Bibliotheca Normannica . His estate is kept in the Berlin State Library . He was married to Gertrud born in 1874. Günther. The marriage had a daughter and two sons; one was Walther Suchier .
