National Railway Equipment Co. (NREC, NRE) is an American company based in Mount Vernon, Illinois . The company was founded in 1984 by Lawrence Beal.

National Railway Equipment specializes in the manufacture and refurbishment of locomotives and locomotive parts. The company also offers ongoing entertainment, maintenance and immediate technical service. A stock of around 500 locomotives is available for sale or rent. NRE has nine production sites in North America. This also includes the subsidiary VMV Enterprises , also known as “VMV Paducahbilt” , which was acquired in the summer of 2002 .

Since 2006 the company has been offering low-emission vehicles with the "N-ViroMotive" genset locomotives. For the international market, the company offers a locomotive with an axle load of 17 tons and 1470 to 2575 kW under the name "E-Series".
