The Bloc national ( French for national block , Arabic الكتلة الوطنية, DMG al-kutla al-waṭaniyya ) was a Syrian political party that campaigned for independence during the period of the French mandate over Syria .
The party was founded by Ibrahim Hananu in 1928 after a national conference . It was not a structured party, but rather a coalition of parties hostile to the French presence in Syria. The national bloc was mainly led by notable conservatives ; Landowners, traders, lawyers, etc. This coalition gathered the fifty richest and most powerful families in Syria.
The political involvement of these notables in the struggle for independence is a holdover from the political struggle that they fought against the Ottoman Empire in their youth . The Bloc national had no clearly defined ideology, nor a social and economic agenda. The main goal that pushed the movement forward was to return to Syrian independence from 1920 through diplomatic and nonviolent action. In 1947, a year after Syria gained independence from France, the party was dissolved and renamed the Parti National ( National Party ). The People's Party split off from it.
In the mid-1950s, the National Party was able to secure its existence by adopting a program that was modeled on that of the Ba'ath Party .
