National Genome Research Network

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Genome Research Network (NGFN) was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2001 to the end of 2013 in order to clarify the function of human genes. The NGFN built on the German Human Genome Project (DHGP). At the end of 2013, the third and final funding phase ended and the NGFN discontinued.

Around 600 scientists from a wide variety of disciplines tried to research the genetic causes of "widespread diseases" such as cancer , heart failure and alcoholism by networking these fields .

Since the diagnosis, prevention and therapy of many diseases are increasingly based on molecular knowledge of the causes of the disease, the NGFN scientists developed suitable examination and treatment methods in addition to the scientific basis. Her aim was to understand diseases and thereby find starting points for the treatment of previously incurable diseases.

The NGFN was a member of the TMF - technology and method platform for networked medical research .
