The Instituto Nacional de Vías ( German  National Road Institute , abbreviation INVIAS ) is a transport agency of the Colombian government . INVIAS was launched on December 30, 1994 and is based in Bogotá .

In Colombia , the agency is responsible for the improvement and maintenance of the non-licensed road infrastructure, the allocation, regulation and monitoring of contracts for the construction of motorways , highways and their maintenance. INVIAS works with the government within the Ministry of Transport to develop plans, programs and projects for the construction, conversion, improvement, renovation and maintenance of the infrastructure.

In 2015, the total length of the national roads was 46,883 km.

Overview of the national roads

The total length of all roads in Colombia is 206,727 km (2015), of which 80% are paved. By far the largest part, with a total of 100,748 km of local and secondary roads, is planned, built and maintained by the municipalities of Colombia ( municipios ). In second place are the departments with a total of 59,096 km (secondary and secondary roads) and the central government is responsible for the remaining 46,883 km of trunk roads . The main routes are chargeable and there are toll stations approximately every 60–100 kilometers.
