NaviServer

Naviserver is an open-source - Web server , a fork of AOLserver provided by AOL is used.

Like AOLserver, NaviServer is multithreading capable, can process dynamic websites programmed with the script language Tcl and is primarily used for heavily frequented websites .

NaviServer / AOLserver was originally developed by NaviSoft , but renamed in 1995 when AOL bought NaviSoft. Since mid-2005 this AOLserver fork has been further developed under the original name NaviServer. In this split-off version, the decision-making process about new features should be more open. The fork is based on the AOLserver 4.x development line.

NaviServer is under the Mozilla Public License , which also allows commercial use.

Some new features that NaviServer has compared to the AOLserver include: a.

  • a watchdog for an automatic restart in the event of an error
  • a start with command line mode
  • the output of all configuration parameters at server start
  • virtual mass hosting
  • an improved version of sendmail with support for character encoding
  • Possibility of using the virtual Tcl file system
  • HTTP range requests for streaming and resumption of downloads
  • so-called spooler and writer threads

The feature of the configurable spooler and writer threads allows efficient downloads and uploads in separate threads. This enables the transfer of files from a configurable size, e.g. B. several hundred megabytes, outsourced so that the standard thread pools are available as quickly as possible for normal page requests.
