Necrópolis de San Carlos Borromeo

The Necrópolis de San Carlos Borromeo , also called Cementerio de San Carlos Borromeo or simply Cementerio San Carlos , is a cemetery in the city of Matanzas , Cuba . It was inaugurated on September 2, 1872 and covers an area of ​​approximately 13.5 hectares. In the local museum, Palacio de Junco, the mummified body of Josefa Petronila Margarita Ponce de León (1815–1872), which was found in this cemetery, is on display.

San Carlos is one of the most important cemeteries in Cuba both in terms of its architecture and the personalities who are buried there.

  • Joseph Marion Hernández (1793–1857), US Congressman, buried in the crypt of the Junco family

  • Fernando Heydrich  (1827–1903), German businessman, engineer and builder of the Matanzas aquaduct
  • Alfredo Nicasio Heydrich Martinez (1862–1933), first producer of sisal on the island
  • Miguel Faílde (1852–1921), musician and dancer of the Danzón 
  • Antonio Guiteras (1906–1935) doctor and revolutionary
