Ferdinand Heydrich Klein (born January 26, 1827 in Barmen , Rhine Province ; died April 1, 1903 in Matanzas , Cuba ) was a German businessman, politician and sculptor.

Politically engaged, he played an important role in the conflict of the Ten Years' War in Cuba. Married to Maria-Candelaria Martínez y Valdez, he was a plantation owner, trader, engineer and also created stone sculptures and watercolors. He is the ancestor of the artists Daniel Garbade and Juan Esnard Heydrich , and father of Emilio Heydrich . Heydrich died in Matanzas in 1903 and is buried in the cemetery of the Necrópolis de San Carlos Borromeo under a monument in the form of a column.

In 1845 Manuel del Portillo initiated the idea of ​​an aqueduct for the drinking water supply of Matanzas without success . The project of the engineer and captain Francis Albear y Lara also met with resistance. When Juan F. Sanchez y Bárcena failed in a similar project, the German engineer Ferdinand Heydrich took matters into hand with G. Fabra y Cabanillas and his company Heydrich & Cie and was commissioned in 1870 for a water canal from the Bello y Benavides springs according to Matanzas. This Matanzas aqueduct is still a landmark of the city and was chosen as a national monument in 2005 .

Industry

Heydrich was one of the first producers of Agave fourcroydes on the island. With his son Alfredo and his company Heydrich y Raffoler & Cie, he applied for the patent , which he finally got after a long dispute and thus started a new type of production in Cuba, which at that time only few knew.

During the uprising of the rebels in the Ten Years War , Heydrich played an essential role as founder and president of the Club de los Alémanes , which had the task of founding a volunteer militia and in this way protecting the goods of German and other foreign merchants. To this end, he had Otto von Bismarck's agreement with the condition of maintaining neutrality .
