The Aqueduct of Matanzas (also Aqueduct of Burriel ) is an aqueduct built in 1872 in the city of Matanzas , Cuba . It was built by the German engineer Ferdinand Heydrich Klein and was the first of its kind in Matanzas.

history

The first but unsuccessful initiative to build an aqueduct in Matanzas came from Manuel del Portillo in 1845. The colonel and military engineer Francis Albear y Lara, as well as Juan F. Sánchez and Bárcena tried again in 1860, but failed because of the funding.

In 1871, the German engineer Fernando Heydrich Klein managed to get permission from the Spanish Queen Isabella II and General Arsenio Martínez-Campos to build and use it through his company “Heydrich & Cía”. It was planned to use fifty liters of water per second from the springs of Bello and Benavides for the water supply of Matanzas.

The aqueduct, which was completed on June 2, 1872, turned out to be an important structure for supplying drinking water to the region. It was declared a national monument and is still in operation today.
