The Neo Geo Pocket is a handheld console of the fifth generation of consoles from SNK , which was launched in Japan 1998th In 1999 production was discontinued and the Neo Geo Pocket Color was announced because the Neo Geo Pocket with black and white screen had sold worse than expected.

SNK had made a name for itself in the arcade sector and therefore had some interesting in-house licenses. Some of these titles were then only implemented for the Neo Geo Pocket, so they were available exclusively for this system in the handheld area. Therefore, despite its short life, the system offered popular titles, including some games from the Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters series .

In order not to annoy buyers of the short-lived Neo Geo Pocket, it was decided to implement a black and white mode in many of the games for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. With a few exceptions, the successor system Neo Geo Pocket Color is backwards compatible with the game modules for the Neo Geo Pocket.
