The New Yalu Bridge is a bridge that spans the eponymous border river Yalu . It connects the cities of Dandong ( People's Republic of China ) and Sinŭiju ( North Korea ). The cable-stayed bridge is about 3 km long.

history

The decision to build a new bridge was made in 2010. In addition to the bridge, customs clearance , hotels, etc. are also to be built.

Construction work began in October 2011 and ended in October 2014. The bridge was opened in November 2015. However, it cannot yet be used meaningfully, as it ends in arable land on the North Korean side (as of August 2015). A toll must be paid to cross. The construction costs amounted to 350 million US dollars and were borne by China alone.

Around 60% of the trade volume between the two countries is to be transacted via the bridge.

In August 2017 it was announced that a businessman from China was ready to invest 300 million RMB (approx. 44.7 million US dollars) in the infrastructure on the North Korean side so that the bridge can be used.

During his visit to North Korea in June 2019, the President of the People's Republic of China , Xi Jinping , agreed to finance the connection to the North Korean road network. According to satellite images, the construction work has already started.
