The edition is divided into the following series:

  • Operas (Volumes 1–4)
  • Secular Works (Volumes 5–8)
  • Spiritual Works (Volumes 9-11, 23)
  • Various vocal works (volumes 12–15)
  • Symphonies (Vol. 16-19)
  • Orchestra and instrumental works (volume 20-21)
  • Arrangements (Volume 22)
  • Supplement (volumes 24-26)

The New Berlioz Edition does justice to the complicated source situation of many of the composer's works, taking into account the latest research results and source finds. The works appear in a volume mostly in chronological order. Vowel texts are reproduced in the original language. Each volume contains a foreword, a critical report, facsimiles and versions, drafts and other materials rejected in the appendices. Volume 25 contains the list of Berlioz's works, first published in 1987 and prepared by Berlioz biographer D. Kern Holoman .

The work of Hector Berlioz, based on English musicians and musicologists, experienced a remarkable renaissance in the second half of the 20th century. The New Berlioz Edition, whose first complete edition of the opera “ Les Troyens ” led to a complete re-evaluation of Berlioz as an opera composer, contributed to this.
