New York is a small town in eastern Henderson County in the US state of Texas . The place is 18 kilometers east of Athens .

The place was founded in 1856 and since 1873 the current part of the place has been built on. The place was named after New York City . In 1884 the place had grown so much that it housed two steam-powered grist mills , cotton processing, two churches, a school and a post office (from 1876 to the 1900s) with a population of 60 people . In 1892 the population had grown to 100 people. After the railway line passed the town in 1901, the development of the town came to a halt. In 1936 the school was merged with the one in Poynor . In 1992 there was still a Baptist church with a population of 20 people. In 2000 the population was 15 people.
