history

Loxene Golden Disc

The origins of the New Zealand Music Awards go back to 1965 when the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC) came up with the idea of presenting a New Zealand music award annually. The idea was submitted to the then popular radio DJ Neville Chamberlain , who in turn used his good contacts with Charles Haines , the owner of an advertising company, to find a sponsor . It was through him that the British shampoo manufacturer Reckitt & Colman was won as main sponsor and the New Zealand Federation of the Phonographic Industry (NZFPI) to formulate the access conditions and define the decision criteria for the jury. The award, known as the Loxene Golden Disc , was first awarded in 1965 and honored musicians for their outstanding achievements for the next seven years until 1972.

Recording Arts Talent Award

The NZFPI, which was represented on the Loxene Golden Disc committee, took control of the award ceremony in 1973, established new structures and with them created the Recording Arts Talent Award (RATA), which is regarded as the forerunner of the New Zealand Music Awards . While the Loxene Golden Disc award honored special singles, the RATA, which was awarded from 1973 to 1976, honored music albums, musicians, producers and technicians.

RIANZ Music Awards

Financial problems and political upheavals led to the fact that the music industry in New Zealand reorganized in 1977 and the NZFPI was renamed Phonographic Performances NZ (PPNZ). One year later she founded the Recording Industry Association of NZ (RIANZ), with which the RIANZ Music Awards were presented from 1978 to 1982 .

From 1983 the prize was finally renamed the New Zealand Music Awards , but from 1992 onwards the name of the respective main sponsor of the prize was added to the name. So became the honors
