The general legal regulations for road traffic can be found in the Land Transport Act 1998 and its amendments, most recently the Land Transport Amendment Act 2009 .

The code will be published online and in print in four editions for cars and other light vehicles, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. The last major change to the traffic rules for cars took place on April 20, 2012. Changes are also published by the NZTA on its website.
