Niedermühle (2014)

The northern watermill on the Aa in the Steinfurt district of Burgsteinfurt is called Niedermühle .

history

The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1352 to distinguish it from the castle mill located a few hundred meters upstream as the “new mill”, but it should have existed a few years earlier. In 1475 the mill was first mentioned under the name "Niedermühle". In the 17th century the mill was used as an oil mill. After the Second World War , the mill was stopped; the stowage right was handed over to the city in 1957.

In 1974 the mill was acquired by a private person who has since taken care of the maintenance of the building and has made the building available to the Burgsteinfurt local history association as a domicile. In 1995, after ten years of planning, with grants from the state and the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation as well as donations from the population and business, the mill was renovated and an operational mill wheel was installed again. Of the original two grinds, one is preserved and ready for use.

The Niedermühle is open to the public every Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from April to September.
