Among other things, he looks after the city museum , the historic Niedermühle and one of the few remaining blueprint workshops .

history

The association was founded on September 28, 1901 by Mayor Terberger as a tourist association. In 1927 the association was renamed the Verkehrs- und Heimatverein. In 1979 the tourist office was founded in Steinfurt. The separation of tasks and the associated better pursuit of the goals in the various areas now made it necessary to rename the association again. The current name has therefore been "Heimatverein Burgsteinfurt eV" since May 6, 1980

The domicile of the association is the Niedermühle. In 2001 the website of the Heimatverein was realized, which has been represented there with a homepage since then. The Heimatverein Burgsteinfurt eV currently has around 550 registered members.

activities

Among other things, the Heimatverein looks after the city museum.

The groups and activities of the Heimatverein include:

  • Emigration history, genealogy and family research
  • Building and monument preservation
  • Customs care
  • Local history research, local history working groups
  • Monthly women’s meeting in the Niedermühle
  • Mill and work group
  • Museum circle Stadtmuseum Steinfurt
  • Public events of the Heimatverein
  • Cycling, hiking and traveling (evening and long-distance cycling tours, hikes, adventure bus tours).

In 1995, after ten years of planning, the Heimatverein Burgsteinfurt thoroughly restored the historic Niedermühle from 1697 and reinstalled an operational mill wheel. Since then the mill has been the seat of the Heimatverein.

The Heimatverein Burgsteinfurt operates a nationally known workshop for blueprint . In the completely furnished old workshop, more than 300, sometimes centuries-old printing pieces (models) are used to print blue fabrics in the typical Münsterland style. This takes up an old Burgsteinfurt tradition, as the existence of such workshops in the city has been proven since the Middle Ages.

In addition, the Heimatverein has been looking after the Steinfurter Stadtmuseum opposite the high school for 20 years. A former municipal home collection from 1911 was expanded by numerous private foundations and donations. The city museum offers an overview of the local history from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. The economic, social and territorial historical developments of Steinfurt are given special consideration here.

The association also takes care of the old gatekeeper house Posten 23. The "Posten 23" stood until 1997 on the Münster-Gronau railway line near the Sellen-Veltrup shooting range and until the end of 1994 was the accommodation for a railwayman who operated the barrier. In 1997/98 the house was relocated to the current cycle path by the Heimatverein.

The local researchers regularly inspect the old border and Schnat stones to the other regions around Steinfurt. As part of its genealogy activities, the association was also significantly involved in research into the emigration of Westphalia to the USA in the 18th and 19th centuries.
