The Lower Saxony Sports Medal is a state award of the State of Lower Saxony which was donated on December 18, 1984 by the State Ministry / Ministry of Culture.

Foundation purpose

The Lower Saxony Sports Medal is a sign of recognition for services to sport through excellent personal sporting performance as well as through the promotion and dissemination of sport in Lower Saxony.

Award practice

The sports medal is awarded annually by the Prime Minister of the state to 12 individuals, teams or clubs who have achieved recognized high sporting achievements and who have also made a special contribution to the reputation of sport through personal commitment and exemplary effect. The sports medal can also be used to award disabled athletes for their performance. In addition, those people can also be taken into account who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion or development of sport in local groups or clubs who have proven to be exemplary.

Award requirements

The eligible awardees must:

  • a) have their permanent residence in Lower Saxony or be a member of a Lower Saxony sports club,
  • b) be worthy of a state honor according to their general behavior.

The clubs worthy of the award must have their headquarters in Lower Saxony and, through the intensity, quality and breadth of their activities, have made an exemplary contribution to the further development of sports offers and sports support functions of the sports clubs in Lower Saxony.

Award suggestions

The suggestions, which should lead to the award of the sports medal, must then be sent to the State Sports Association of Lower Saxony. This then forwards the suggestions with a statement to the Interior Ministry for the Interior and Sport by January 15 of each year. The Prime Minister decides on the proposals. The handover takes place on the occasion of the annual reception of Lower Saxony Sports - in recent years by the Minister of the Interior and Sport. The loan recipients receive a certificate of award when the award is presented. The medal itself becomes the property of the recipient. In addition, the award will be publicly announced in the Ministerialblatt.

Appearance, texture and way of wearing

The sports medal is made of bronze and has a diameter of 65 mm. It is not intended to be put on, so it is a non-wearable award. It shows a sporty symbol on its front, a sprinter that is embossed. The reverse bears the inscription: FOR MERIT FOR THE LOWER SAXONY SPORT and in the middle the coat of arms of Lower Saxony, the Sachsenross .

Revocation and withdrawal of the medal

The award can be revoked by the Prime Minister in the event that the entrusted person turns out to be unworthy of the award due to his later behavior. In these cases, the sports medal must be returned.
