A low-temperature heating system is at low flow temperatures tuned heating system . Heating can be provided more economically at the low temperature level. However, the regulation of low-temperature heating, especially when large buildings are involved , is slower than with other systems and the hot water no longer falls off as a by-product without further measures.

Low-temperature heating systems are often used in combination with condensing boilers or heat pump heating systems, as these heating systems are particularly suitable and have proven themselves in terms of energy for the low temperature range. If there is a boiler in the heating system, it must be a low-temperature boiler made of corrosion-resistant materials or in which structural measures prevent condensation on the boiler surface of the water vapor generated during combustion.

This means that the boiler water temperature does not have to be kept higher than the flow temperature by a downstream mixer , but the boiler water temperature varies with the flow temperature as required. This reduces the exhaust gas losses and the losses to the basement. Some boilers can even cool down to room temperature without damage, which reduces downtime losses.

For the power range below 400 kW, it has been in force in Germany since 1998 that standard boilers whose flow temperature must not fall below 70 ° C due to their design may no longer be installed. But low-temperature boilers can also replace the standard boiler in existing heating systems designed for high flow temperatures. The energy losses then decrease mainly in the transition season. One measure to be able to lower the flow temperature is to install a circulation pump.
