Kidney belt

Motorcycle kidney belt

The kidney belt is a 15 to 30 cm wide elastic belt to protect the human body from getting cold when riding a motorcycle .

The term “kidney belt” does not come from the fact that the kidneys would overcool. The wind when riding a motorcycle can lead to hypothermia of the organs and the muscles of the lumbar spine and thus to pain due to tension; for hypothermia in the kidneys, however, the core body temperature would have to drop very sharply, but this remains constant in healthy people. Rather, the kidney belt gets its name from the location in which it is worn on the body.

In addition, a kidney belt offers a certain support function, which has a more psychological effect on the driver.

There are different versions from the simple standard model to the lined model to the elaborate model with an integrated protector . Kidney belts can be made of different materials such as: PU foam , neoprene or, more recently, phase change materials . Leather straps that used to be common are now rarely used.
