The Nieuport 24 C.1 was a French biplane - seater fighter from the First World War .
development
The Nieuport 24 was designed by Gustave Delage at the Societé Anonyme des Établissements Nieuport in Issy-les-Moulineaux based on the successful Nieuport 17 . Like them, it still had V-shaped wing handles, but already had the aerodynamically improved fuselage with an oval cross-section, rounded wing tips and the rounded tail rudder and horizontal stabilizer, as well as the new grinding spur of the later Nieuport aircraft.
It was armed with a synchronized 7.7 mm Vickers machine gun, the British version with an additional Lewis machine gun, which was mounted above the upper wing.
commitment
At the end of 1917 the first machines came to the French air force , which, however, already had a much more powerful combat aircraft with the SPAD S.VII . However, since this aircraft was not yet available in sufficient numbers, the Nieuport types 23 , 24 and 27 were used at the front by the French, Russian and British combat squadrons until early 1918. The E.1 variant of the Nieuport 24 was mainly used as a trainer.
The US Army Air Service also procured the Nieuport 24 as a training aircraft. In addition, the Royal Naval Air Service used around 50 aircraft built by British Nieuport, and the Romanian , Russian and Serbian air forces also used some Ni 24. In Japan , Nakajima built the Nieuport 24 under license .
