Career

Slavko Perović (born June 5, 1934 in Belgrade ) and Nikola Karović (born July 14, 1933 in Nikšić ) initially began their careers independently of each other in the late 1950s, but then also appeared as a duo and recorded an LP and several singles together on. Disguised as Mexicans, they sang Mexican folk songs with Serbo-Croatian lyrics.

Slavko Perović also sang chansons and hits, while Nikola Karović was also known as an interpreter of military songs, most of which were composed by Branko Karakaš (1930–2014), Darko Kraljić (1920–1998) and Đorđe Radišić (* 1925).

background

Slavko Perović and Nikola Karović were the most successful representatives of Jugomeksička muzika (Jugo-Mexican music). The background to this was the great success of the Mexican film Un día de vida (1950, director: Emilio Fernández , known in Yugoslavia as Jedan dan života , Serbo-Croatian for a day in the life ) with Yugoslav audiences, which was followed by a wave of Mexican-influenced music by Yugoslav interpreters. The song "Mama Juanita" from the film in particular was part of the repertoire of numerous Yugoslav musicians as Mama Huanita (Serbo-Croatian text by Mario Kinel and Ivo Robić ). The beginning was made by the Trio Tividi (consisting of Tino Stipinović, Vigor Finderle and Dinko Banić) on the single Trio Tividi pjeva popularne meksikanske pjesme, uz meksikanske orkestar Nikice Kalogjere (German: The Trio Tividi sings popular Mexican songs, accompanied by the Mexican orchestra Nikica Kalogjera ; Jugoton EPY-3106). Karović and Perović also recorded a version of this song.

Other artists of the Jugomeksička muzika were the tenori ; the Kvartet Paloma , which also accompanied the singers Ljubomir Milić (single Razvod braka , German: divorce, discos EDK-3071) and Miroslava Mrđa; as well as the singers Ana Milosavljević (single Praznik u Meksiku , German: Holiday in Mexico, PGP-RTB EP-50129) and Nevenka Arsova (single Paloma negra , Diskos EDK-3056). Probably the last representative of the Jugomeksička muzika was the Duo Panama (consisting of Danijela Galić and Nikica Mohenski), which released the LP Mexico in 1983 ; this also contains a cover version by Mama Huanita .
