Nikolauskapelle, view from the Inner Bridge

The Nikolauskapelle in Esslingen am Neckar is located on the Inner Bridge and is the only preserved of 17 chapels in the city.

The Gothic chapel with a bell gable was built around 1300 and is considered to be the oldest structure on the bridge. It was first mentioned in a document in 1350. It stands on the west side of the bridge and is connected to the Maille by stairs . The chapel was originally dedicated to the patron saint of boatmen and raftsmen St. Nicholas .

In the 16th century it was transformed into a sales stand. Between 1822 and 1848 the first workshop of the file factory was Friedr. Dick housed in the building. From 1880 the town's beautification association used the Nikolauskapelle as a repository for antiquities. Since 1956 it has served as a memorial for the victims of National Socialism . The chapel is closed on the street side by a grille that allows a view into the interior. An inscription above the opening indicates its current use.
