from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED is a film scanner for 35mm films . The scanner is sometimes also given the name “LS5000 ED”, where LS stands for “Laser Soft”. The automated scanning of several framed slides , film strips and uncut film rolls is possible with the help of adapters that are also available . The film scanner was launched in 2003 and has since enjoyed the reputation of being the best desktop scanner for 35mm film. There has been no modernized successor and since 2010 the Nikon Coolscan 5000 has been sold in good used condition for several times its original price.

important functions

The Coolscan 5000 ED has a Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement), which detects and removes image errors caused by dust and scratches. This is already done during the scanning process by means of infrared scanning. The method can only be used for color films. In black and white films, the silver grains of the film are interpreted as dirt. Since ICE uses the separate IR channel, it can no longer be carried out afterwards. It is therefore advisable to always switch ICE on. All other corrections can be carried out later on the scanned image with a good image processing program. It should also be noted that the Nikon Coolscan 5000ED has problems using the ICE process with Kodachrome slides. Due to the scratch correction with Kodachrome, image details are lost to a large extent. It is therefore advisable to digitize Kodachrome without ICE.

The film scanner also has a Digital-ROC ( Restoration of Colors ), which restores the faded colors in the original artwork and corrects the color cast , a Digital-GEM ( Grain Equalization and Management ), which removes disturbances caused by the film grain, and a digital DEE ( Dynamic Exposure Extender ), which improves the reproduction of details in areas of shadows and highlights in overexposed or underexposed photos (a forerunner of the Nikon D-lighting function).

Scan examples

Effect of ICE technology

Scratches and dust are removed.

Effect of ROC technology

ROC can be set in steps 1 to 10. Too much ROC correction leads to an overemphasis on the red and green colors.

Effect of GEM technology

GEM can be set in levels 1 to 4. The effect is similar to that of a soft focus. It is only visible at a high magnification.
