VueScan is a software for scanning and raw data image manipulation developed by Ed Hamrick since 1999.
Versions
VueScan is offered in two editions (Standard and Professional) at different prices. Both variants are contained in the same file, with an activation code determining the edition. Without an activation code, VueScan runs in demo mode; This corresponds in terms of functionality to the Professional Edition and differs from it only in that the images created have an embedded watermark .
Supported hardware
Both editions support between 2400 and 1900 scanners and cameras from 35 different manufacturers, depending on the operating system used. These include devices for which there is no longer any executable manufacturer software on the current operating systems. The Linux version also supports some devices for which there are no or no fully functional free drivers for Linux. VueScan partly uses its own drivers (e.g. for Nikon's CoolScan series), partly drivers from the scanner manufacturers. In the latter case, these scanners are only supported on the operating systems supported by the manufacturer's driver.
Range of functions
The Professional Edition has the following range of functions:
- Scanning of reflected light originals
- Scanning of negative film (color compensation for the orange mask)
- Scanning of slide film including special treatment for Kodachrome
- Dust and scratch removal using an infrared channel (with Nikon film scanners also for Kodachrome )
- Restoration of faded and yellowed colors
- Multiple scans for noise suppression (even with scanners that do not allow multiple readings)
- Multiple exposure to increase dynamics
- Batch processing
- digital watermarks
- Output formats: JPG , TIFF , PDF , text
- integrated color management system with ICC profiles and IT8 -Farbkalibrierung
- Generation of scanner raw data (up to 64-bit TIFF, DNG ) for later processing.
- OCR support
- Updates are permanently free
In the standard edition, which is intended for occasional scanning of documents with the flatbed scanner , the scanning of negative and slide film, OCR support and other advanced functions are omitted; Updates are free for one year.
