Niwot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niwot is a small town in Boulder County in the US state of Colorado . The population was 4,006 at the last census in 2010. The median income is US $ 39,943 per year; Niwot ranks 17th according to the average income of the cities in Colorado.

After the Colorado Central Railroad expanded its rail network from Boulder to the northeast in 1873, Niwot was created along the railway line in 1875. The place name goes back to the Arapaho chief, Chief Niwot , which in German roughly means "left hand"; the Arapaho Indians previously hunted in the valley known as the Left Hand Valley . After a freight station and a post office had been set up, business districts developed first on the west and later on the east side of the railway line.

Up until the 1940s, the railroad was a determining economic factor in the city; today, however, there is no longer a freight yard there.
