NoScript is an extension originally developed solely for Firefox that blocks and optionally allows active content on websites . The extension was later developed for use in Chrome .
properties
By default, all active content is automatically blocked. This includes JavaScript , Java applets , Adobe Flash , Microsoft Silverlight and other web technologies. There is also the option of blocking frames and iFrames .
Pages are released via a positive list or only temporarily until the browser is closed. Blocked pages are also blocked within permitted pages and only executed after a separate approval.
An import and export function enables the positive list to be saved, for example when reinstalling the browser. It is also possible to synchronize the shares between different installations.
NoScript contains protection against cross-site scripting , which prevents third-party content from executing malicious code on an approved website. Exceptions to this can be created using regular expressions . Clearclick protection detects attempts at clickjacking and alerts the user to this with a warning.
history
Version 1.0 of NoScript was released on May 13, 2005.
After more than five years and many minor versions, version 1.10 was published on July 14, 2010. It was the last version that still offered support for Firefox 2 and older versions.
NoScript 2.0 was released on July 27, 2010. In addition to a reliable clickjacking blockage was XSS -protection improved and the above-mentioned import and export function added.
With the introduction of Firefox 57.0 in November 2017, the component model Cross Platform Component Object Model (XPCOM) and XML User Interface Language (XUL) used by NoScript are no longer available. As a result, there was a change from NoScript and a change in the user interface from version 10 of Noscript.
distribution
With around 60,000 downloads per week and around 1.7 million users (as of October 14, 2017), NoScript is one of the most popular Firefox extensions.
Replica for other browsers
The concept was later implemented for other browsers such as Google Chrome - for example with the open source extension "ScriptSafe".
The uMatrix software, which is available for various browsers, represents a similar extension with similar and advanced functions .
