Nobuo Ikeda

Nobuo Ikeda (born May 13, 1947 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese German studies scholar and Prof. em. from the University of Tokyo with the research area “ German-language literature ”. He has lived in Ummendorf, Baden-Württemberg, since 2014.

Life

Nobuo Ikeda grew up in Tokyo and studied German at the Philosophical Faculty of Tokyo Metropolitan University . His teachers include the renowned scholars and essayists Suehiro Tanemura and Jirô Kawamura. In 1975 he was appointed lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities at Nagoya University. From 1976 to 1978 he conducted research at the Universities of Bonn and Erlangen. After returning to Japan, he worked as an associate professor at Nagoya University until he was appointed associate professor at the Faculty of Humanities at Tokyo University in 1983. From 1991 to 1993 he taught as a visiting professor at the University of Trier. In 1993 he was appointed full professor at the University of Tokyo and worked there until his retirement in 2012.

Nobuo Ikeda's research is mainly devoted to German romanticism and contemporary literature. In addition to his teaching activities at the university, he tried to introduce contemporary German-language literature from Austria and Germany. In addition to literature, his translation activities include the creation of subtitles for numerous German films and the like. a. the Neue Deutsche Welle and Wim Wenders.

From 1991 to 1995 Nobuo Ikeda was a founding board member of the International Novalis Society, Oberwiederstedt. From 2003 to 2005 he was President of the Japanese Society for German Studies. He was also head of the Komaba Art Museum at Tokyo University from 2006 to 2009.
